Alliance for Water Justice in Palestine raises awareness about Israel’s use of water as a weapon against Palestinians. Since 2013, the organization has offered public education and grassroots coalition building to connect Palestine’s struggle for equal access to clean water under Israeli apartheid with clean water access struggles around the world. They believe water is a human right, it should not be privatized or used as an instrument of oppression, and it should be equally distributed.
The Alliance for Water Justice in Palestine’s compilation of Water Facts show how Israel’s illegal settlements impacts Palestinian’s access to clean water: Israel will divert clean water in the West Bank from Palestinians to Jewish settlers by allotting settlers six times more water and cutting Palestinians’ water supply up to 50% during the summers. Settler waste and sewage water is discarded on Palestinian land, causing 44% of Palestinian children in rural West Bank areas to suffer from diarrhea, 26% of all reported disease in the Gaza Strip, and 12% of Gazan children’s deaths. 98% of the Gaza Strip’s two million residents (nearly half of them children) do not have clean drinking water due to Israel’s continued destruction of Palestinian wells and water infrastructure, which has also led to making 97% of the water in Gaza undrinkable.
