The American Council for Judaism (ACJ), founded in 1942, is an American Jewish anti-Zionist organization that opposes Zionism and the creation of a Jewish state. The ACJ views Judaism as a universal religion and not a nationality, believing that Zionism’s political nationalism corrupts the Jewish tradition. The organization advocates for the full integration of American Jews into American civic culture and has recently re-energized to support anti-nationalist Jewish communities.
ACJ was founded on the principles of 19th-century Reform Judaism, which emphasized Judaism as a spiritual, universal faith and not a political nationalism. Its members seek to maintain a form of Judaism free from political and nationalistic entanglements. Today, the ACJ is re-energizing its efforts to educate the public on the history of Jewish dissent to nationalism. Its activities include community programming, leadership training, and public education initiatives.
