In 2021, Avraham Burg wrote an affidavit asking to no longer be legally designated a Jew in response to a 2018 law that made Israel the nation-state of the Jewish people. He said, “The meaning of that law is that a citizen of Israel who is not Jewish will suffer from having an inferior status, similar to what the Jews suffered for untold generations.”

Avraham “Avrum” Burg is an Israeli author, politician, and businessman. He was a member of the Knesset, the chairman of the Jewish Agency for Israel, the Speaker of the Knesset, and Interim President of Israel.
