Heritage for Peace is an international network of “heritage workers who believe that cultural heritage is a common ground for dialogue and a tool to build peace.” The group’s mission is to support heritage workers, “indifferent of citizenship or religion,” who work toward “the protection of cultural heritage for future generations.” They maintain projects in several countries and regions where war and destruction threaten both national and cultural heritage and memory, including Palestine, Syria, Sudan, and more.
Since the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza began in October 2023, the organization has released a report on the conflict. The report cites “cutting off food, water, fuel, and aid” to Palestinian people in Gaza and acknowledge the “great loss and suffering.” It also emphasizes the imminent destruction of “heritage and identity of the Palestinian people in Gaza.” In order to support their Palestinian colleagues in the group, Heritage for Peace says they compiled this report to highlight the “archaeological and cultural sites and places that have cultural value for the local population and residents of that geographical area – Gaza.”
