Yaffa (Jaffa), Israel
Yaffa, Israel

Yaffa (or Jaffa, or Yafo in Hebrew) is an ancient port city that, prior to the Nakba, was the largest city in Palestine. These photos from the early 1900s show Yaffa as a growing commercial city with train tracks, ships, and automobiles. The few thousand Palestinians who were able to stay in Yaffa after the Nakba were subject to Israeli military rule and curfew known by both Jews and Palestinians as “the Jaffa Ghetto” until the summer of 1949. Zionism continues to erase Palestinian history from Yaffa.
